My pancreas is cooler than yours.

I never thought I would get this excited about durable medical equipment, however, I am now officially the owner of a shiny, brand new, state of the art pancreas! It feels like Diabetes Christmas! Ok, so it's not exactly a pancreas, per se, it is an insulin pump. A faux pancreas. (My last one bit the dust a few weeks ago due to an incident at the beach involving excessive heat. My actual pancreas bit the dust a little over 16 years ago due to an incident involving weak genes. It has been free loading off of me ever since. Just hanging out next to my other fully-functional, hard-working organs. I digress...)

Anyway, my lovely health insurance footed (hmm...not so sure that can be used in the past tense) the bill for an upgraded model, so good-bye Apple II E pump, hello sleek new powerbook pump. It is a very lovely charcoal gray and is slightly smaller than the last one.

Some people wear their heart on their sleeve. I wear my pancreas on my pants.

Of course, this will mean that any regular players of the "let's give Syrah her punches when we have been drinking" game will have to be retrained. It's a whole new ball game, kids.

I don't think there have always been all these commercials. 'This is me and BB King. We have a lot in common. I play the guitar. He plays the guitar. I have diabetes. He has diabetes.' There is a semi-scary one about someone going blind too because he didn't get his blood sugars under control.

Pickler is correct. There are no pump commercials. (side note: the new continuous glucose monitoring deal is not covered by insurance, so they may start advertising for that) I think most of the commercials are aimed towards type II diabetics, the more common version. (Because our nation is becoming more and more sedentary.) There are 20.8 million people in the US with diabetes. Only 5-10% of them have type I. The pickler and I are a rare breed indeed.

Sorry I missed you and your new pancreas last weekend. I was in Brazil. When I see you next, can I pump it?!?! I think I've only done it once before on your old pancreas.
